GUWAHATI: Acclaimed filmmaker and scriptwriter Bhaskar Jyoti Das, known for his contributions to Assamese cinema, passed away on December 26 at the age of 51 after battling cancer. Das was celebrated for penning the scripts of award-winning films such as Haanduk, Sonar Baran Pakhi, and Bokul Phulor Dore.
A multifaceted talent, he also co-directed and produced the feature film “Antardhan” and created several acclaimed documentaries, including “An Unknown Summer,” which competed at the 2024 International Documentary and Short Film Festival in Kerala, “Where Is My Home (co-directed),” and “I Don’t Want to Be Born Again for Poem.”
Das extended his contribution beyond filmmaking. He served as a jury member at the 2nd Guwahati International Film Festival and the 2nd Northeast Film and Video Technicians’ Awards (NEFVTA). At the time of his hospitalization, he was reportedly working on the post-production of a feature film.
Originally from Tangla, Das had been a long-time resident of Guwahati, where his work significantly impacted the regional film industry. A final homage to the filmmaker was paid at Surjya around 9 pm on Thursday before his body was taken to Tangla for cremation. Prominent film personalities offered their deep condolences to Das’s bereaved family.
