Disney’s much-anticipated prequel, Mufasa: The Lion King, concluded its first week at the Indian box office on a strong note, earning Rs 74.25 crore. According to data from Sacnilk.com, the film added an estimated Rs 7 crore to its collections on Day 7, with notable contributions from its multilingual releases.
Breaking down the numbers, the English version led the pack, grossing Rs 2.5 crore on Thursday, while the Hindi-dubbed version followed closely with Rs 2.35 crore. The Tamil and Telugu versions contributed Rs 1.35 crore and Rs 80 lakh, respectively, helping the film maintain its momentum in regional markets.
Currently, the original English language of ‘Mufasa’ leads as the highest-grossing version, with an estimated collection of Rs 26.75 crore collection. The Hindi-dubbed version follows closely in second place, earning Rs 25 core. The Tamil and Telugu versions both earned around Rs 11.2 crore and 11.3 crore, respectively.
The combined total of Rs 74.25 crore is impressive but still falls short of the first-week collection of its predecessor, ‘The Lion King’ (2019), which earned Rs 81.57 crore in the same period. While Mufasa has made a promising start, it trails behind the box office performance of the 2019 live-action remake, which went on to collect Rs 158.40 crore in India over seven weeks.
Internationally, Mufasa saw a resurgence over the Christmas weekend. In the United States, the prequel rebounded with a holiday boost, earning $14.7 million and outperforming ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’, which grossed $10.3 million.
The total worldwide collection of the film now stands at an estimated $200 million. According to reports, the film was made on a budget of $200 million.
As ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ heads into its second week, it remains to be seen if it can maintain its pace and surpass the milestones set by its predecessor and become one of the highest-earning Hollywood films.
Currently, it stands behind ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ which earned an estimated Rs 128.40 crore and ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire which earned Rs 106.42 crore.
