IMPHAL: The indefinite economic blockade of National Highway-37 linking Imphal and Jiribam was reportedly lifted at 6:00 PM on December 30, 2024.
The blockade, that went into effect since 27 December 2024 is led by the Joint Action Committee (JAC), Jal Jeevan Mission-New Development Bank with cooperation from stakeholders in Tousem and Tamenglong Blocks.
Ending of this blockade has come into view after an agreement made by Vishnu Prakash R Punglia Ltd., VPRPL and some local facilitators; in this case Akhon Kamei and TP Sangjiuyiung.
The main reason for the blockade was the delay in making payables due to local stakeholders. Part of the settlement is that VPRPL will settle the pending bill by January 7, 2025, without further delay. This assurance, secured from negotiations, became the decisive factor that convinced the JAC to ease the blockade.
The JAC acknowledged the growing frustration among the general public, especially with the New Year celebrations approaching. The blockade had caused significant disruptions, particularly in the transportation of essential goods and services. In light of these grievances, the JAC decided to temporarily ease restrictions, balancing their demands with the community’s needs.
The JAC issued a stern warning to all the stakeholders despite the agreement. The committee resolved unanimously to resume a more stringent form of agitation if VPRPL fails to honor its commitment by the agreed deadline. This underscores the seriousness of the JAC’s demands and their determination to ensure compliance.
The blockade has been lifted temporarily, and commuters and traders dependent on National Highway-37 are relieved. But the situation remains precarious and may flare up again if promises are not kept. The coming weeks will be crucial to determine whether the agreement lasts and brings a lasting solution to the conflict.
