Meghalaya Issues Advisory on Human Metapneumovirus: No Major Threat, Public Urged to Stay Vigilant

Meghalaya Health Dept confirms Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) poses no major threat. Public advised to maintain hygiene and seek care for flu-like symptoms. No fatalities reported nationwide.

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Health and Family Welfare Department, under the Principal Secretary, had a high-level meeting today on Human Metapneumovirus in the wake of recent media reports that have brought the virus into focus. The Health Experts Committee examined the situation, gauging the state’s preparedness and public health implications.

HMPV is a respiratory virus that was first identified in 2001. According to national data, nine confirmed cases of HMPV were reported in December 2024 from 714 suspected cases across the country, and no deaths have been reported. According to health officials, the virus causes mild flu-like symptoms, such as fever, cough, sore throat, and a runny nose.

The Health Department said the current trends were consistent with seasonal respiratory illnesses and do not indicate an unusual or significant threat. However, the public is advised to remain vigilant, especially for vulnerable groups such as children under 14 and elderly individuals.

Citizens are advised to wash their hands frequently and wear masks if they have flu-like symptoms. Medical consultation is also encouraged if the symptoms persist.

The IDSP is going to keep checking on the whole situation and take prompt action if needed. The officials assured that Meghalaya’s health infrastructure will be capable of tackling outbreaks.

The health department continues to strive toward the goal of maintaining public health and has appealed to the people for proper updates during this season.
