Kolkata: In court this afternoon, Sanjay Roy, who was found guilty in the rape-murder case of a 34-year-old doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, reaffirmed his innocence and claimed that he had been set up in the horrifying case that rocked the country.
Today, the court will decide the case’s sentencing. Roy was found guilty on Saturday by Judge Anirban Das, who also promised to give him a chance to appeal before rendering the decision today. According to him, Roy might face a minimum sentence of life in prison and a maximum sentence of the death penalty.
“I haven’t done this,” Roy claimed in his court appearance today. I’ve been set up. My rudraksha mala would have broken if I had done it, but many other things were damaged. Whether or whether I have been framed is up to you.
“I have to deliver justice,” the judge retorted. “I base my decision on the information at my disposal. For three hours, I have also listened to you. Your case has been argued by your attorney. The accusations have been validated. “Now, I’d like to hear your thoughts on the penalty,” he continued.
Roy was a civic volunteer who visited the hospital, and the CBI, which took over the probe from Kolkata Police, has called for his execution. According to the victim’s parents and CBI counsel, this was a “rarest of rare cases” and Roy needed to be given the death penalty. Roy’s attorney referenced Supreme Court rulings regarding the imposition of the death penalty. The judge then requested that the attorney provide a list of the guidelines so that he may review them. To pronounce the punishment, the court will now convene at 2:45 p.m.
As police work tirelessly to prevent any untoward occurrence following sentencing, the Sealdah court premises have been transformed into a fortress. Doctors and others have gathered close to the court despite being denied access. The demonstrators claim that Roy couldn’t have committed the crime by himself and that the other people shouldn’t go free.
The parents of the victim have expressed dissatisfaction with the CBI’s inquiry. That “other perpetrators involved in the crime had not been brought to justice” is what they have claimed. Only one individual is not connected to the crime, but the CBI has not been able to capture the others. According to her mother, “If we want to stop future crimes in society, such criminals have no right to live.”
On the day of the event, the 34-year-old physician, a postgraduate trainee at the hospital, was working the night shift. She was discovered dead in a hospital seminar room the following morning. Doctors took days off work to demand workplace safety after the event, which spurred rallies across the country.
