On Tuesday (January 28, 2025), Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that his government is dedicating its full resources to the ambitious endeavor of securing the hosting rights for the 2036 Olympics. This endeavor will elevate Indian sports to unprecedented levels and generate opportunities in a variety of sectors.
In his capacity as a guest of honor at the 38th National Games’ inauguration ceremony, the Prime Minister emphasized that the bid, if successful, would significantly enhance the nation’s infrastructure.
“We are pushing for hosting rights of 2036 Olympics, it will take Indian sports to new heights,” the Indian Prime Minister stated.
“The Olympics are not merely a sporting event.” All sectors benefit when the Olympics are held in a particular location. It establishes improved facilities for athletes. He further stated that it stimulates construction, establishes new connectivity and transportation facilities, and, most importantly, increases tourism.
“People from all over the world, including the athletes, will come down to India.”
Mr. Modi had announced India’s intention to host the 2036 Games at the 2023 Session of the International Olympic Committee in Mumbai. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has transmitted the official letter of intent to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The IOC will not make a decision until 2026, and India’s subsequent action is to draft an official proposal that outlines its comprehensive strategy for the Games.
Qatar and Saudi Arabia are also competing for the 2036 hosting rights, and it would require a substantial endeavor to surpass their bids.
“Our objective is to improve your capabilities, and we are committed to providing you with the assistance you require.” Mr. Modi addressed the athletes in attendance at the ceremony, stating, “We regard sports as a critical component of the nation’s development.”
“India is rapidly becoming one of the world’s largest economies, and the sporting economy must be a part of this growth.” The coaches, trainers, nutritionists, physiotherapists, physicians, and equipment are all included in this. When discussing the National Games, he stated, “These Games are not merely a sporting event.” It is an excellent platform for demonstrating the ethos of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.” It is a commemoration of the unity and diversity of India.
“We are generating an increasing number of opportunities for our athletes to realize their full potential.” We regard sports as a critical factor in the comprehensive development of India.
He also discussed the Target Olympic Podium Scheme and the Khelo India initiative, which are among the numerous government programs that have benefited the athletes.
“We have allocated crores of rupees under TOPS to the athletes, and the sports budget has been tripled.” As a result of the Khelo India Youth Games, youthful athletes are able to advance. The same is true for the Khelo India University Games, as university students are receiving new opportunities.
“After the Khelo India Para Games, the para athletes are achieving success.”
The Prime Minister also provided the youth with some fitness tips, advising them to reduce their oil consumption and engage in more physical activity in order to combat the increasing prevalence of obesity.
“It is recommended that you reduce your oil consumption by 10% and incorporate additional walks and physical activity into your daily routines.” It is imperative that we combat obesity. He stated, “It is a significant health concern.”
