IMPHAL: Saikul in Manipur became a place of heightened tension as an emergency shutdown was declared, following clashes between locals and security forces in Saibol on December 31.
The riot began when the local women resorted to protesting against what they had termed the “forceful occupation” of the community bunkers by security personnel.
According to eyewitnesses, the confrontation became fiercer when tear gas was used on the unarmed protesters, which led to chaos. “It was like a battlefield,” said one protester, who wished to remain anonymous.
Some women claimed that they were beaten up during the clash. Most of the victims were taken to the nearest hospital, while others were treated in the nearby villages.
The community leaders condemned the security forces’ actions. “This is not law enforcement; it is a violation of human rights,” said a local leader and demanded accountability. Calls for an independent investigation have been made, with assurances that the community will continue to seek justice.
Civil society groups and local organizations have denounced the use of force against protesters. Many groups are now planning massive demonstrations, including possible blockades along National Highway 2, to further their demands for justice.
The incident has highlighted ongoing tensions in the region, prompting community leaders to call on authorities to address local grievances and investigate allegations of misconduct.
