The Coordination Committee (CorCom), an apex body of six banned insurgent groups in Manipur, has announced an 18-hour total shutdown on January 26, 2025, from 12 AM to 6 PM, in protest against the Republic Day celebrations.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the CorCom urged citizens to boycott the celebrations, stay indoors, and avoid any activities supporting the day’s observance. Essential services such as medical care, electricity, fire services, water supplies, and religious functions have been exempted from the shutdown.
Citing the volatile situation in the state, CorCom described Manipur as a “militarized state” and accused the Indian government of exploiting ethnic communities through intelligence agencies and security forces to suppress legitimate movements. The group also criticized New Delhi’s internal policies, alleging the promotion of “proxy insurgency” and “false indoctrination” to divide and suppress indigenous populations.
CorCom comprises the proscribed Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL), People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK), its Progressive faction (PREPAK-Pro), Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF, the political wing of the People’s Liberation Army-PLA), and United National Liberation Front (UNLF). These groups have long been demanding sovereignty for Manipur.
Additionally, the outlawed Socialist Revolutionary Party (SOREPA), Kangleipak, declared on Monday its decision to boycott Republic Day 2025 in the state, aligning with CorCom’s stance.
