The Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Initiative Celebrates 10 Years with District-Level Events

As India marks the 10th anniversary of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) initiative, districts across the country have launched celebratory events to honor a decade of efforts aimed at empowering women and addressing gender imbalance.

In Ukhrul, the celebrations began at the DRDA Hall, Mini Secretariat, organized by the District Administration in collaboration with the ICDS Cell, the One Stop Centre (OSC), and the District Hub for Women Empowerment. Enoli Chonchuirinmayo Luithui Pheiray, Central Administrator of OSC, delivered a keynote address recounting the journey of the scheme, launched in 2015 to combat declining child sex ratios. A bike rally, flagged off by Chief Guest Eno. Kajaigai Gangmei, ADM of Ukhrul, raised awareness, followed by a pledge ceremony.

Bishnupur’s celebrations, held at the Mini Secretariat Complex, featured DC Lourembam Bikram administering a pledge to eliminate gender discrimination and champion girl-child education. The district announced plans for educational programs, awareness campaigns, and activities culminating on International Women’s Day. A cycle rally and signature campaign were also organized.

In Senapati, Additional Deputy Commissioner Rang David Kung flagged off a rally at the Mini Secretariat Complex. Participants carried slogans like “She dreams big, let her fly high” and “Every girl has a dream, allow her to fulfill it.” The rally was followed by a cleanliness drive ahead of a Minister of State’s visit.

Kangpokpi launched its celebrations with activities led by Deputy Commissioner Mahesh Chaudhari at the District Conference Hall. Gender sensitization workshops, menstrual hygiene awareness campaigns, and skill development initiatives were highlighted, with plans to felicitate meritorious students during Republic Day celebrations.

In Churachandpur, an oath-taking ceremony under the theme “I will Embrace, Empower, Educate every Girl Child, not just Today but Everyday” was led by Additional Deputy Commissioner Thangboi Gangte at the Mini Secretariat.

Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015, the BBBP initiative has been pivotal in changing the narrative around gender equality in India. Over the past decade, it has evolved into a comprehensive movement, integrating with programs like Mission Shakti and complementing government laws aimed at protecting women’s rights.

The 10-year milestone highlights India’s commitment to achieving gender equality through education, safety, and empowerment for girls. As district-level events continue, the overarching message remains clear: empowering women is essential for building an inclusive and prosperous nation.
