Will Summon Social Media Users Who Attempt to Incite Conflict: Chief Minister of Manipur

N Biren Singh, the Chief Minister of Manipur, has informed the police and intelligence agencies. Soon, notices will be sent to summon all social media page holders and admins of groups that indulge in such practices.

Imphal: Chief Minister N Biren Singh of Manipur issued a warning on Thursday to the administrators of social media pages who post content that infringes upon the personal space and legal rights of others. Mr. Singh also stated that a significant number of new organizations have emerged since the ethnic crisis commenced in May 2023, and a number of them have engaged in anti-social activities, including extortion, detention, and assault.

“We are currently observing indications of tranquility in the state, and I am requesting the media’s assistance in reestablishing a state of equilibrium,” the Chief Minister informed reporters.

According to Mr. Singh, there have been recent social media posts that were communally charged and interfered with the personal affairs of others.

“On social media, interrogations of specific women regarding their personal lives were posted by individuals who were not authorized to do so.” He stated, “These incidents are extremely unsettling, uncomfortable, and uncivilized.”

According to Mr. Singh, he has informed the police and intelligence agencies of this matter. He will shortly send formal notices to summon all social media page holders and admins of groups that engage in such practices.

“Who has authorised these groups to interfere in the private lives of individuals?” Mr. Singh stated that the government is not interested in ending the careers of youthful individuals.

“Those who have been arrested for looting or torching the residences of elected representatives have been apprehended.” Some of them are currently incarcerated, while others may be subject to charges under the National Security Act (NSA). “Their lives will be challenging, as their records will be with the police, and those with FIRs will be unable to access government services,” he stated.

Mr. Singh stated that the state government has exercised restraint in response to the violence, as it has caused suffering among the populace. However, the situation has now reached an intolerable level.

“A multitude of organizations have arisen.” Establishing organizations is permissible under a democratic system. However, who has granted these organizations the authority to apprehend and assault individuals? He further stated that any action that could potentially harm society should be immediately halted.

According to Mr. Singh, special police squads will be established.

“They have summoned office employees for the purpose of extortion.” Who has granted them authorization? If their demands are not fulfilled, they are threating officials with kidnapping. The Chief Minister stated, “This must be halted.”

Mr. Singh urged the public to refrain from endorsing those who have unilaterally implemented laws.

Violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities has gripped Manipur since May 2023, resulting in the deaths of more than 250 individuals and the displacement of thousands.
