On Tuesday, officials announced that three members of the Assam Rifles, who were stationed at Leimaram Waroiching in the Kangpokpi district of Manipur, have passed away as a result of suspected food poisoning.
According to officials, the three were among the five personnel who were confined to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal on Monday due to symptoms of food poisoning, including vomiting.
Havildar Umesh Kumar, 49, a resident of Buxar district in Bihar, Lance Naik Rama Shankar, 59, a resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia district, and Warrant Officer (GD) Phoolchand, 56, from Dehradun in Uttarakhand, have been identified.
Shankar passed away on Monday, while Kumar and Phoolchand passed away in the early hours of Tuesday. After the post-mortem, their corpses will be returned to their families.
The hospital has reported that Rifleman Ghanashyam Singh, 48, of Atrarson Village, Chhapra district in Bihar, and Naib Subedar (GD) Gagan Singh, 59, of Haridwar district in Uttarakhand, are not in peril.
The doctors at the hospital stated that the soldiers were admitted with symptoms of food poisoning. However, they deferred to provide an explanation for the cause of death until the autopsy report was received.
According to a police officer in Manipur, the paramilitary force has been requested to surrender the bottles of liquor that the soldiers have consumed.
An AR officer denied allegations that the fatalities were associated with spurious liquor, emphasizing that it was a suspected case of food poisoning. According to him, the five were transported to the hospital on Monday after experiencing vomiting and chest pain.
An investigation is currently ongoing, and the police have registered an unnatural death case in connection with the incident.
