Assam Cabinet Approves Setting Up Of International Skill Centre

The Assam Cabinet has given the green light for the establishment of the Assam International Skill Centre (AISC) to boost global employment opportunities for the state’s workforce.

GUWAHATI: The Assam Cabinet has given the green light for the establishment of the Assam International Skill Centre (AISC) to boost global employment opportunities for the state’s skilled and semi-skilled workforce. Operating under a ‘hub and spoke’ model, the central hub will be based in Guwahati, with additional centres planned across the state.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the AISC will equip the state’s workforce to meet international labor market demands, paving the way for overseas job opportunities.

In another decision, the Cabinet approved disciplinary action against 683 employees who had unlawfully taken advantage of the Orunodoi scheme, a poverty alleviation program for low-income households. An internal investigation uncovered that these employees had misused the scheme for personal benefit.

The Cabinet has designated 2025 as the ‘Year of Reading’ to promote a culture of book reading among the youth. The initiative will feature district-level book fairs and the gifting of books to encourage participation.

The Cabinet also approved a monthly remuneration of Rs 9,000 for 278 village heads in forest villages and 668 village heads under the Forest Act, starting from January 1, 2025.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma chaired a cabinet meeting on December 19, where a series of transformative projects and reforms were approved to boost infrastructure, agriculture, and power utilities in Assam.

The Cabinet had approved an equity investment of Rs. 1,272 crore for a joint venture to set up the Namrup-IV unit of Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Ltd (BVFCL).

BVFCL, a central public sector undertaking involved in gas-based urea production in Namrup, Dibrugarh, will enhance its operations to meet contemporary agricultural needs. Assam’s 40% equity stake in the project highlighted the government’s dedication to bolstering fertilizer production in the region.
