The event is all set to fetch global recognition for the traditional Jhumur dance of Assam's Tea Tribes as it attempts to create a world record with more than 7,000 performers.

GUWAHATI: Preparations are in full swing for ‘Jhumair Binandiya’, a grand Jhumur dance recital scheduled to be performed on February 24 at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, Sarusajai, Guwahati. The event is all set to fetch global recognition for the traditional Jhumur dance of Assam’s Tea Tribes as it attempts to create a world record with more than 7,000 performers.

The presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi will further add to the significance of the event. Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota has issued specific directives to district commissioners (DCs) for smooth execution, particularly with regard to the safety and well-being of female performers. Some of the key arrangements include safe lodging, transportation, and medical assistance for participants and trainers.

DCs with large contingents of performers have been asked to personally monitor the preparations and co-district commissioners have been urged to provide assistance. Coordination with guardian ministers, MLAs, and additional chief secretary of the cultural affairs department has also been requested.

District-level committees are being constituted to monitor the training workshops and redress grievances through dedicated redressal mechanisms. Pre-event inspections of accommodation and stadium facilities will be conducted by district-level officers between February 20 and 23 to ensure readiness.

The cultural affairs department will conduct Jhumur dance workshops in assembly constituencies from 20 to 23 January to select the performing artistes for this event. Accommodation and venue management will be handled by the DC, Kamrup (Metro). This time, at this momentous occasion, efforts will be made to spotlight Assam’s glorious heritage before the international audience, assimilating different performers from Assam.
