AGARTALA: In a major operation, the Kalamcherra police station, in collaboration with the Tripura State Rifles (TSR), successfully destroyed over 1 lakh Ganja plants on Thursday.
The action was taken after conducting a drone camera surveillance of the illegal cannabis cultivation in the Manikyanagar and Beluarchar regions.
The anti-narcotics drone operation detected Ganja plants spread over around 30 acres of forest land, which were divided into six plots in the two areas. The plants were mature and ready for large-scale production of the drug.
Led by Officer in-Charge Nadu Gopal Deb, the police and TSR personnel launched the operation in such a way that complete destruction of the illicit cultivation was carried out. The authorities reported that the plants might have been used to supply a sizable amount of narcotics but were successfully halted from circulation.
Earlier this month, Tripura police apprehended two persons and recovered 189 kg of cannabis worth Rs 25 lakh from Dhalai district. On the basis of a tip-off, the police stopped an SUV carrying the consignment from Agartala to Dharmanagar
Police officials emphasized that the operation is in tandem with the state government’s commitment towards making Tripura a drug-free state. Thursday’s operation was seen as a major step toward curbing illegal cannabis cultivation, and authorities confirmed that such drives would continue in the future to combat the growing drug menace in the state.
