As Rescue Efforts for Assam’s Coal Mines Intensify, the Body of a Trapped Labourer Is Recovered.

The body of one of the trapped labourers in a coal mine in Umrangso locality in Assam’s Dima Hasao district was recovered by the para divers, said Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday.

“21 Para divers have just recovered a lifeless body from the bottom of the well,” CM Sarma posted on X. We are praying and thinking of the bereaved family.

The CM added that Army and NDRF personnel are currently entering the well as part of the ongoing rescue effort.

With Army and NDRF divers already inside the well, the rescue effort is well underway. On the ground, Navy soldiers are preparing to plunge in after them. SDRF dewatering pumps have left Umrangshu for the site in the meantime. In addition, CM Sarma stated, “At Kumbhigram, the ONGC de-watering pump has been loaded onto a MI-17 helicopter, pending weather clearance for deployment.”

Chief Minister Sarma previously stated that an illegal coal mining operation was conducted at the location where the workers were trapped, and a charge was filed in the appropriate sections.

One person has been taken into custody by police in relation to the illicit coal mining.

“The police have filed a formal complaint under Umrangso PS Case No: 02/2025, citing Sections 3(5)/105 BNS, r/w Section 21(1) of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957, to investigate the incident,” the Chief Minister stated in an X post. It looks like an illegal mine on the surface. In relation to the case, one Punish Nunisa has been taken into custody.

There are at least nine known labourers who were stranded in a coal mine in the Umrangso area. One of the nine labourers is a native of Nepal, one is from West Bengal, and the others are from various Assamese regions. They have been identified as Mustafa Seikh, Khusi Mohan Rai, Sanjit Sarkar, Lijan Magar, Sarat Goyary, Hussain Ali, Jakir Hussain, Sarpa Barman, and Ganga Bahadur Shreth.
