SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has announced plans to construct a state-of-the-art swimming pool at Mawkhanu.
“This is going to be one of the largest such pools in the North East and that is something that I am looking forward to,” Sangma said.
He revealed that the detailed project report (DPR) for the Olympic-sized swimming pool, along with a tennis court, has already been prepared.
Additionally, the Chief Minister announced plans for a 40,000-seater football stadium in Mawkhanu, which will be the largest in the country.
“We are also preparing DPR for the largest football stadium, which will be in Mawkhanu. This is going to be a 40,000-seater capacity stadium dedicated to football, and it will be the largest stadium in the country. This is something that we are really looking forward to,” he added.
Meanwhile, earlier last month, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma laid the foundation stone for Meghalaya’s first passenger ropeway project at Shillong Peak Viewpoint, marking the official commencement of a Rs 175-crore initiative aimed at providing panoramic views of Shillong city and enhancing the state’s tourism infrastructure.
The foundation stone was originally laid by President Droupadi Murmu in January 2024. The project, which connects Shillong Peak and Lawsohtun, is expected to attract both domestic and international tourists.
The Chief Minister and Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh handed over the letter of acceptance to the construction consortium KEC International Limited – Tantia Construction Limited JV, officially kick-starting the construction phase. The ropeway will be executed in partnership with the French company POMA, which will supply key equipment.
