Para-Athletes Make History At 6th Meghalaya Games With Inspiring Participation

For the first time in the Meghalaya Games' history, seven para-athletes—four women and three men—are registered to compete in the para-shooting event, which encompasses both pistol and rifle categories.

JOWAI: For the first time in the history of the Meghalaya Games, seven para-athletes—four women and three men—are participating in the para-shooting event, which includes both pistol and rifle categories.

Their involvement at the 6th Meghalaya Games in Jowai has captured attention, as they demonstrate their determination and skill, despite coming from challenging backgrounds.

Supported by the Shooting Association of Meghalaya and the Government of Meghalaya, these para-athletes are focused on inspiring others and proving that obstacles like poverty cannot stop their dreams.

The para-shooters include three athletes competing in pistol shooting: Manika Pasi, Yomiky L Nonglait, and Fibisofronea Kharmusulman. In the rifle event, Wanjingkmen Tymsen, Da ai hunshisha Iawphniaw, Anjudica Thyrniang, and Nengba R Marak are representing the state.

Their journey to the games has not been easy. The Shooting Association of Meghalaya conducted a trial for para-athletes, and out of 40 participants, nine were selected for further practice.

The association provided them with free training facilities, which helped the athletes hone their skills. Regular practice is crucial for their progress, but the lack of a shooting range at their homes makes it difficult for them to train during holidays.

Additionally, as many of the athletes are hearing-impaired, communication has been a challenge. To overcome this, an interpreter was assigned to help bridge the gap between the athletes and the coaching team.

The para-athletes have expressed their gratitude towards their coach, Balari Rani, who learned basic sign language to communicate better with them, as well as their schools, families, and the shooting association for their continued support.

This year’s games, with over 3500 athletes competing for 1600 medals, also marked a milestone as para-athletes were included for the first time, providing them a platform to showcase their talents.
